Pure
Country Ranch hog dog training facility is a great first
step to preparing a young dog for the woods. We will
work with any dog no matter how young or old. We will
test and see if the dog is capable of developing into an
extreme hunter. What we do is find out how you hunt and
try to train your dog accordingly. The manner in which a
dog is breed will directly effect his or her hunting
performance. For instance hounds are slower, they have
cold noses and are open on track, some are semi open
when trailing. Hounds are good for large environments
where the hogs are difficult to find. Cur dogs are a
very fast pace breed. Cur dogs have good wind noses and
can usually catch a scent that has been present for 2 to
6 hours. Where a hound has a nose that can pick up a
scent that has been present within 10 to 15 hours and
can track and run it. Most Cur dog breeds have hot
noses when it comes to trailing. Straight Cur breeds
seem to be allot rougher than hounds when it comes to
actually catching a hog. My personal favorite is a
Plot-Cur cross. I own 30 myself that I have breed and
trained from some of the best Cur and Plot hounds that
I have ever hunted with. These dogs seem to posses ever
quality needed when it comes to hunting in the woods
.These dogs have taken me places and shown me more hogs
than I can ever begin to tell. So if you want to give
your dog a great start training, or just trash breaking
training we will be happy to get your dog ready for the
woods. We will not waste your time on a dog that does
not have the desire to hunt or run a hog. We should know
within the first few days if the dog is capable of
becoming a true hog dog or not. During your dogs stay he
will be treated like a part of the family at "Pure
Country Hunting Ranch". |

Phase One
starts with dogs in bay pen for a one week trial to
determine if the dog is capable of progress. We find if
the dog has the desire to work. Dogs 6 - 8 Months will
be worked in bay pen first week for thirty minutes twice
a day. Second week phase one, dog will be worked in a 12
acre pen for an hour a day. Trainer will determine if
dog is capable to continue training. |
Second phase of
training consists of working with other dogs while in
baying on a hog that suits the dogs size. Nothing to
rough since the dogs are trying to learn respect
gradually. The point is not to break the dog so fast
that he loses his spirit. The dogs are to learn, first
smell, position, and then social skills. The dogs learn
team work no matter what other dogs are hunting with
him. |
Third
Phase, the dog is taught independence
and teach the dog to strike instead of follow. The dog
is worked in 12 acres on his own hog with nothing too
rough. The dog will be tested on the method of seek and
strike so that he will learn independence during this 3
day portion of training. Once the dog is finding hogs on
his own in 12 acre pen, he is sent others dogs one at a
time to flow back into team work. The dog at this point
will still know he started that bay on his own. |
|
Phase Four, the dog is now taken
to a 90 acre sow and pig pen to learn to trail. The dog
is then joined by older started dogs and allow them to
hunt. We then have a good idea of how the dog is going
to hunt. For instance, how he signals in the woods
either by being silent or semi-open. Dogs hunt
differently. Hounds are open and semi. Cur's are usually
semi and silent. |
Phase Five, we will see how gritty
the dog is by hunting him with older dogs. He learns the
"how to run a race" in a big woods scenario. This will
show if he will run a hot track and stay in the race
until the hog is stopped and bayed. |
